Adidas Grappler Wrestling Shoes

Adidas Grappler Wrestling Shoes

Adidas Grappler wrestling shoes, commonly referred to as "Grapps", were made in the late 1990s.  These shoes were discontinued after being produced.  Rumors today are that the heel was too low on the shoe.

2 of the 4 Grappler Colorways:

Grapplers came in four colorways.  They were:

  • White & Black
  • Red, White and Black
  • Gold, White and Black
  • Blue, White and Black

The blue colorway is the rarest of them all, as it was discontinued shortly after the release. This was prior to the entire line being discontinued with the release of the Adidas G-Responses, aka Grappler responses.  There are only 3 pairs of the blues I know to exist.  Despite the rarity of the blues, all colorways of this shoe are extremely difficult to find, especially in good condition.

Why Grapplers Were Discontinued

It's been rumored that they were discontinued due to being illegal since the heel is so low.  However, I'm not sure how true that rumor is.  Numerous people still wear these shoes for competition, even at the NCAA level. If this shoe is banned from competition, I haven't ever seen it enforced.  2x All-American and 4x PA State Champion Chance Marsteller is known for wearing these.

How Much Are Grapps Worth?

In old ads I've seen, Adidas Grapplers retailed for $89.99-$104.  Today, these shoes go for at least 3x that price if they're in decent condition.  In good condition in a size 8.5-12 (the most common sizes), you're typically looking at $400+ regardless of colorway.

Fun Fact About These Shoes

A fun fact with these shoes is that they were originally advertised to highlight the insides, which are lined with brushed nylon.  The ads claimed this was good for wrestlers who don't wear socks in competition.  However, I can't say I've ever met a wrestler who doesn't wear socks for their matches!
